8 Video Game Mechanics That Were Too Complicated
3. Equipment - Tales of Zestiria
Tales of Zestiria is a decent entry into the Tales RPG franchise, albeit with one with an intensely annoying equipment system - one so maddening it might well cause you to put the game down and never come back to it.
In Tales of Zestiria, equipment can be given special skills through four skill slots, with certain combinations resulting in extra effects. And on top of this, you can create additional, more powerful gear by fusing two items together.
Turning gear customisation into what's effectively a hyper-convoluted and poorly tutorialised puzzle is no bueno, made worse by a tough-to-navigate menu interface, ensuring few could be blamed for just dipping out entirely.
It's a textbook example of a system that's buried in layers of complexity for no good reason. It isn't fun, it's just a tedious, confusing, and irritating detraction from the rest of the game.
There are surely many who made it to the end of the game while still having no clear idea of quite how it all worked.
