Between 1993 and 2013, EA Sports released an annual college football game until licensing disputes kicked the franchise into touch. In recent years, there have been hints that it could return, but nothing concrete has been announced, until now.

Tired of waiting for EA to pull its finger out, college football fans Alex and Kameron Lewis have taken it upon themselves to revive the NCAA Football series under the tentative title of 'Gridiron Champions'.

The duo have teamed up with Ashes Cricket developer Big Ant Studios, which has agreed to foot $2.5 million of the development costs. They are aiming to cobble the rest together via crowd funding and release the game for PC and consoles in 2019.

Reports suggest that the initial version of the game may not include real-life names, logos, mascots and other features that made the EA titles authentic, but once funding is in place, Alex and Kameron will likely have the chance to get the powers that be around the negotiating table.
