8 Video Game Side Characters We Should've Played As Instead

1. Garrus Vakarian - Mass Effect

Your mileage will surely vary with Mass Effect's protagonist Commander Shepard depending on whether you chose Femshep or her sawdust-dry male counterpart, but all the same, neither Shepard can truly hold a candle to Garrus Vakarian.

Garrus is the consensus favourite companion character throughout the original trilogy for damn good reason - he's a velvet-voiced badass with a firm moral core and basically undying loyalty to Shepard, yet he's also unafraid to call out bullhooey when he sees it.

Whether you stay strictly pals or become lovers, what more could you possibly want?

And unlike most companions Garrus actually has a substantial role across all three games, while being meaningfully developed as he seeks to find his place in the galaxy.

Everyone wants a space bro who's got their back just like Garrus, but you know what'd be better than that? Actually playing as the damn space bro.

Between his charming personality, combat effectiveness and willingness to stick things out to the bitter end, Garrus is a companion we desperately wanted to inhabit - in a totally not creepy way, of course.
