8 Video Games You Didn't Realise Were Set At Christmas

For an alternative gaming experience this holiday season.

Is "the most wonderful time of the year" just a little to saccharine for your tastes? Would you rather your festive gaming had a little less tinsel and lights?

Well fear not, because there are a healthy selection of games out there set at Christmas yet avoid the lavish glittery décor that usually comes with it.

That's right, not every game set at Christmas is actually about the holiday season. In fact, in some cases it's just a backdrop that contributes absolutely nothing to the story or style.

In other cases, there are hints of the holiday season that linger in the background, informing us of the setting and adding a layer to story without directly impacting the events of the plot. Director Shane Black frequently does the latter with his own movies, and surprisingly we also get it in some very unexpected video games.

The chances are you've played many of these titles without realising that they could technically be considered a Christmas game. So, if you don't want to be left numb to the core by a barrage of tacky decorations or joyous music, yet want to play something that is seasonally relative, take a dive into one of these titles you never realised were set at Christmas.

8. Tattletail

Metal Gear Solid Christmas
Waygetter Electronics

Two years after the stonking success of Five Nights at Freddy's, this incredibly creepy survival horror from Waygetter Electronics found its way to Steam. Following in similar footsteps to the aforementioned FNAF, Tattletail also takes place over the course of five nights, except they're all in the lead up to Christmas.

The story follows you the player as you naughtily open a Christmas present early on 20th December. Inside the present is a brand spanking new toy called Baby Talking Tattletail, which looks so horribly similar to a Furby, it's a miracle they haven't been sued.

After the reveal of the toy, things get weird. Each night going forward you'll need to complete a series of objectives, whilst doing your best to keep your new toy from making too much noise. Why? Because if you don't, then Mama Tattletail will come and get you.

Though it's a game for adults, the legend of Mama Tattletail could and should be used as a story to teach your kids why you should never open presents before Christmas.
