8 Ways Video Games Punish You For Breaking Their Rules
1. The Witcher 3
When The Witcher 3 first launched it was, oft forgotten by its fans, a bit of a buggy mess. As CD Projekt Red was quick to patch a lot of these bugs out, players looking to turn Geralt into an unstoppable killing machine were upset to find that an exploit for farming EXP was patched out - and replaced with a devious punishment.
In the original version of the game, players found that a specific plot of land just outside of White Orchard allowed them to farm (that is not a pun) cows infinitely by murdering them and then immediately meditating, causing them to respawn. This was a semi-decent way to get some easy EXP, but it also allowed players to hoard their hides and sell them for a good profit.
In patch 1.05, CD Projekt Red snuck in a countermeasure to punish players for farming said cows - the form of the Bovine Defense Force.
After the patch, should Geralt kill a certain amount of cows in that same spot, an over-leveled Chort will spawn named "Bovine Defense Force Initiative" which would infinitely respawn should players manage to kill it.
