In a year where the industry went from all-systems-go, "The next generation is here!!" to "Actually... we're gonna stagger releases across generations, the Switch Pro doesn't exist and worthwhile Xbox exclusives are coming 2022 at the earliest", it can leave you with a feeling of longing.

Yes, there are incredible games like Ratchet & Clank: Rift Apart, Resident Evil Village and Hitman 3, alongside notable stinkers like Balan Wonderworld and Dungeons & Dragons: Dark Alliance, but what about that girth of middle-ground where lesser-known titles make it or break it?

2020 had Rebel Galaxy: Outlaw, Captain Tsubasa, John Wick Hex and Inertial Drift. 2019 had Observation, Katana Zero, Trover Saves the Universe and Void Bastards.

With the industry being bigger than ever; being played by more people than ever, each year sees that spectrum of production quality and marketing power get wider, resulting in tons of hidden gems that get lost in the shuffle.

Note: We're dealing with final home console releases only. Some titles have appeared on early access, mobile, Apple Arcade or PC before 2021.
