9 Critically-Panned Video Games That Players Love

7. DC Universe Online

Metacritic: 67

A rough-around-the-edges MMO, DC Universe Online was met with a middling response when it launched in 2011. It was partly justified, too: despite being one of the first big games to bring together the entire superhero stable for an epic RPG experience, everything from the actual gameplay to the missions to even the design of the world itself felt lacking.

Still, there was a solid foundation to be found, and building your own superhero and joining forces with your favourite DC characters fulfilled a childhood dream that more than made the game worth picking up for fans. Even better though, with updates and expansions the MMO transformed into a genuinely great title in its own right, no longer propped up by the quality of its characters.

Sadly, the critical consensus never changed to reflect this, and potential players are still wary of jumping into the game today. It's a shame, because unlike Marvel Heroes, DC Universe Online excelled in creating an avid community of players who could elevate a pretty good experience into something truly special.
