6. The Darwin Project

The Darwin Project
Microsoft

Sadly, for as awesome as The Darwin Project looks, it was roundly laughed at when debuting at E3 2017, as Microsoft elected to have an "eSports commentator" try to "spice up" gameplay.

The name refers to an in-world experiment/TV show where contestants attempt to survive out in the cold, utilising a number of different weapons and abilities to fell other players. This manifests in-game through the arena being comprised of specific "zones" that can freeze over, forcing players together in different ways, as well as letting you fast-travel from one area to the next.

An Xbox One exclusive, The Darwin Project plays more like a third-person, 32-player version of The Long Dark than anything more energetic or competitive. Gameplay is primarily spent ensuring you can actually make it around the map, crafting fire sources and amassing other materials to stay alive - all things that should distinguish it against Fortnite and PUBG, later this year.
