9 Mysterious Creatures Hidden In Famous Video Games

4. A Giant Squid - Assassin's Creed II

Assassin's Creed II contains six hidden tombs, each dedicated to an early member of the Italian Brotherhood of Assassins, and each packed full of sweet treasure for the player to snag - should they prove skilful enough to navigate through each location's mix of puzzles and platforming.

But that's not all: one of these tombs - found at Santa Maria della Visitazione - contains a secret nestled in its watery depths, in the form of a giant squid creature that can be seen for a few brief seconds.

If the player stands still and looks in the water by the first lever, after a minute or so, a short, eerie cutscene will play that shows the squid swimming past the camera. Harmless, right? Well, not exactly. If you look in the water for a second time, another cutscene will play that shows one of the squid's tentacles shooting out of the water and whipping right by you.

Little is known about this squid, and what purpose it might serve - if any - but it's a cool little easter egg that adds to the sense of wonder you get while exploring the game's mysterious historical locations.

Danny has been with WhatCulture for almost nine years, and is currently Doctor Who Editor and WhoCulture Channel Manager, overseeing all of WhatCulture's Whoniverse coverage. He has been writing and video editing for 10+ years, and first got a taste for content creation after making his own Doctor Who trailers and uploading them to YouTube (they're admittedly a bit rusty by today's standards). If you need someone to recite every Doctor Who episode in order or to tell you about the making of 1988's Remembrance of the Daleks, Danny is the person to ask.
