1. Mass Effect 2's Main Plot Is Completely Pointless
Middle-sections of a trilogy are always going to be difficult. They serve to tie-up loose ends from the first section while also building up the story for the third and final section, yet, when released as games or films, they still have to satisfy and entertain as they're being released as a full product. Mass Effect 2 actually handles this problem well; it features massively improved gameplay, it introduces a bunch of great new characters with interesting side-stories and the goal of gearing up for and completing the Suicide Mission is great motivation to carry on with the game. Yet, you can also argue that Mass Effect 2 is completely and utterly pointless in the overarching Mass Effect story. Firstly, the game immediately forces you to work for the bad guys. Cerberus in Mass Effect 1 are portrayed as a force of evil within the galaxy, yet Mass Effect 2 aligns you with them. For a guy who is supposed to be a shining example of humanity, it doesn't really make a lot of sense for Shepard to follow along with them. It also further increases the feeling that Mass Effect 2 is a self-contained side-adventure; your work for the bad guys isn't really going to mean a lot in the long term, is it? It doesn't help that the whole story is one big filler section, either. The story is based around the Collectors; a race of aliens who are abducting entire human colonies for mysterious purposes. It turns out that they're trying to create a Reaper (an old race that harvests sentient life) from human genetic material, all while under the command of another one. Shepard destroys the Human-Reaper and the rest in old space continue their advance on the galaxy. Despite all your efforts in Mass Effect 2, the galaxy is no better prepared for the Reaper invasion. The worst aspect of Mass Effect 2's story though is how Mass Effect 3 overwrites a lot of it. The final choice in Mass Effect 2 (to destroy or preserve the Collector Base to harvest its technology) has no effect at all on Mass Effect 3. Cerberus recover the Human-Reaper and use it as a power source, meaning killing it at the end of the game had no influence on the story either. With a little rewrite, Mass Effect could have become a two-part series, in all honesty, sadly making Mass Effect 2 a bit of a non-event. Agree? Disagree? I have an addiction to achievements, a craving for new bands and a dream to become Captain America. I once finished second in a Mario Kart 7 tournament so I'm kind of a big deal.
