You'd be forgiven if you managed to miss it, but Dark Souls actually has a very rich lore and world. At first glance there doesn't seem to be much of a story, just a down and out world filled with monsters. But with the incredible backstories so many bosses have, and the incredibly detailed background, it's actually the sort of world that you can get properly immersed in - were it not for the way the game treats story as if it were an optional extra. This is attitude is particularly prominent when you discover that certain story elements are only discoverable in New Game + (which not everyone will get to) by examining certain items (which not everyone will do). This is actually something we already know we're going to see, with it being confirmed that there will be an hour of in-engine cutscenes for DS 3. It seems likely that where in previous games, the vast majority of the storytelling took place either by skippable dialogue or the exposition at the start, there will be more of an in-game story, with more fleshed out characters and plotlines. Even the downloadable content 'Scholar of the First Sin', for Dark Souls II added multiple endings, making the actions of the player much more significant - a tact that should be carried forward.
