9 Times Critics Ignored INCREDIBLE Video Games

3. Nier

Thanks to the sequel, Nier: Automata, the original Nier game has received more positive press in recent years. Though when it was first released it was considered to be a weird mishmash of styles with bland, flavorless visuals. It was given middling or even poor reviews by many, including a 5/10 by Gamespot.

The game sold about 130 thousand copies worldwide the year it was released. After Automata was released, renewing interest in the weird little original, the director Yoko Taro stated by 2019 over 500 thousand copies had been sold. Which is respectable, but with the game's budget, Yoko stated it wasn't a loss, but also wasn't a resounding success.

Though it has finally earned the cult following it deserved, it is still cursed with those ten-year-old reviews. But as described by Eurogamer's Jeffrey Matulef, five years after it's initial release, Nier is "the rare game that gets better with age." One critique of the game that was favorable, even in 2010 was Famitsu which was awed by the positive style of how Nier handled its multiple endings.

And even those who decried the game most brutally admitted it had fantastic music.
