9 Upcoming Video Games You Need To Be Worried About
5. FFVII Remake Pt 2
Following years of speculation, the remake of Square Enix’s beloved 1997 JRPG was formally announced in 2015, to rapturous applause and rabid speculation from those in the community who won’t accept that IX is a superior game.
It would be another 5 years before the game actually hit shelves, and it was only at this point that fans realised that when the studio meant ‘Remake’ they really meant it. Using the original narrative as a starting point, Enix expanded the game to a colossal scale, filling it with fully fleshed out supporting characters, new locations, and a somehow even more confusing relationship with slinky silver antagonist Sephiroth.
Greatest of all, however, was the introduction of The Whispers, ghostly entities tasked with maintaining the destinies of the world and its inhabitants. Following the defeat of a gargantuan ‘Whisper Harbinger’in the game’s finale, it seems like the destinies of these beloved characters, as dictated by the 1997 original, are anybody’s guess.
While the game was rightly lauded for its scale and ambition, by extension these same elements are those which rubbed up many die hard fans in completely the wrong way. Where some saw abundant scale, others saw tiresome fetch questing as mere distraction in a frustratingly linear world. Whilst some people applauded the unexpected twist away from the established story, many saw an unnecessary reinterpretation of an objectively perfect original.
Encompassing only the opening section of VII, the inevitable sequel is surely on the mind of every FF fan, and, for many, it is with a tinge of worry, and a fair few questions. How far down the rabbit hole will this narrative go, how much bloat will be piled into this beloved title, and how many chapters will Enix bleed out in the pursuit of such infuriating convolution?
