Oh 2K Sports, after years of churning out cosmetic reskins of the same sports franchises and charging us full price for the privilege, it was only a matter of time before the wheels fell off, and fall off they did in pretty spectacular fashion.

To call WWE 2K20 a PR disaster would be like calling the coronavirus ‘a bit of a concern’. Riddled with more bugs than an entomologist’s compost heap, characters would randomly teleport, find themselves stuck in a time loop, bend in impossible directions or even fall through the world entirely. The backlash from this technical train wreck of a game was enough for 2K to rethink their whole yearly sports franchise model, and 2K21 was shelved altogether.

Coming back after a year off, a huge amount of expectation is focused on the follow up to this unplayable nightmare. While it’s tempting to think that the time away can breathe some fresh air into the franchise, it's worth remembering that the 2K formula was experiencing some pretty sharp criticism even before hurling their character models through the nth dimension.

Accusations of formulaic gameplay and releasing games for cynical profiteering instead of genuine improvement have been circling 2K for years, and you really do have to wonder if more of the same will be on the menu when those glitches have been fixed.
