9 Video Game Secrets That Were Hiding In Plain Sight
6. The Riddle - Trials HD
Okay this... this is crazy. A level of clue-finding and cerebral athletics on a Jonathan Blow-type level.
Because although Trials HD gradually lent into a wider lore surrounding cloning factories of bodies being thrown at obstacle courses, back in Trials HD, something even grander was right in front of us the whole time: A commentary on the meaning of life.
Coming through a slew of symbols, images and equations, developers RedLynx clearly put these in for the most eagle-eyed players, or the most dedicated online detectives. To even find the pieces to this riddle, you had to drive off the beaten path; falling down crevices or going the wrong way, often ending up in an un-winnable state, but at least you had another piece of the puzzle.
Thankfully, you can now find years' worth of time invested by scores of fans in the TrialsGames' channel video below:
Everything from Ludvig van Beethoven's symphonies to Piri Reis' map of the world in 1513 are in here, centring on the notion of curiosity, expression, and purpose. Creative Director Antti Ilvessuo would later state that he didn't create the 'meaning of life' riddle specifically, but "set the rules out" instead. The point was that players would interact with the clues across the game to create their own fascination with wonder and the pursuit of knowledge.
Either way, the meaning of life continues to be as illusive as it is rewarding, no matter what you're playing.
