Anthem: 10 Things Bioware Must Deliver
2. Different Environments
As gorgeous as Anthem’s overgrown wilds look, they’re thematically similar to a lot of games of recent years, from the abandoned New York of Crysis 2, to the decaying cityscapes of The Last Of Us and the ravaged West Coast of Call of Duty: Ghosts.
Anthem needs to break out of this overdone aesthetic for its combat environments, or it runs the risk of its locations becoming indistinguishable from the herd. The very same press conference that showed off Anthem also included footage from State of Decay 2 and Days Gone, which offered up a similar vision of civilisation abandoned and reclaimed by time.
Being a science fiction game, Anthem has an infinite scope for new environments. Mainstream game developers have forgotten that a game can be set anywhere and look like anything, something Anthem’s creators need to have remembered to help produce something truly compelling.
