3. R-99
The R-99 is the best SMG in Apex Legends, with an off-the-charts fire rate (currently the highest in the game), higher base magazine size than the Alternator, and recoil that's easier to manage than the Prowler. This thing absolutely shreds, and with an extended magazine attachment, it's a strong weapon to use at any stage of the game.
Now, it does suffer from the inherent pitfalls of having such a high fire rate and a middling magazine size - namely, a ton of reloads - but its reload animation feels surprisingly pacy, allowing you to fire off clip after clip in rapid succession.
Because it fires so fast, the R-99's damage-per-second is ridiculously high - it beats out every assault rifle in the game - so as long as you keep your aim steady, you stand a chance in any close-to-mid-range encounter, no matter what gun you're up against. If you have enough ammo, the speed of this thing even allows you to wipe entire squads in seconds, especially with that larger clip.
As an added bonus, SMGs can equip the Digital Threat sight attachment, which highlights enemies in red - even through smoke. Bangalore's tactical ability plus the R-99 is a legendary combo.
