5. Freydís Eiríksdóttir

There are two major tales about Freydís Eiríksdóttir, the sister of Leif Erikson who accompanied him to the New World in the 10th century.

The first comes from the Saga of Erik the Red and tells of her fight against Native Americans (Skraelings to the Vikings) who attacked their camp. Many of the men flee but Freydis, outnumbered and eight months pregnant, stays to do battle, reputedly panicking the attackers by exposing her breasts and bashing her sword against them.

The other story is from the Greenland Saga and was probably written with the intent of discrediting her and her descendants. It concerns the killing of a group of rivals by Freydis' husband at her request, and her subsequent murder of their womenfolk with an axe.

Whatever the case, she gets her place in this list by being an archetypal shield-maiden and an undeniable badass...
