Assassin's Creed: Victory - 10 Things We Can't Wait To See
9. To See If They Can Save The Present Day Stuff
Remember that bit in AC II where Minerva (the Goddess at the very end) literally talked to you as the gamer, whilst also addressing Desmond being in the Animus? It was genius, and one of the best endings there's been in years, not to mention a solid fourth wall-break that made you imminently aware of the concept of control and the person who's strings you're twiddling. However, although this opened up the narrative to the idea that Desmond's destiny was to save the world from an impending meteoric disaster, it was then that precise premise that Ubisoft couldn't deliver on. Come the close of Brotherhood ol' Des was being brainwashed by Gods who - even as the plot described - shouldn't have been able to do so, leaving the self-aware premise of Black Flag's "you're a gamer playing a gamer" being simultaneously genius and completely limiting in its scope and execution. For the first few games it always seemed like Desmond was slowly learning all of his ancestors abilities - making him the ultimate modern day powerhouse, yet it never fully materialised. Maybe in Victory we can start playing as another newcomer in position of an Animus machine (or some hacker who's built his own), trying desperately to train themselves with past ancestral experiences to fight something or someone in their reality? The juxtaposition of these old ways with a modern day setting is exactly what the series needs and was building up to, pleasing fans new and old whilst contrasting the Victorian England setting with whatever present day context they choose.
