Before FIFA 13: The Evolution Of Football's Biggest Gaming Franchise

2000 - FIFA 2001 FIFA 2001 became the first to be released onto the "next generation" of consoles, that being the Playstation 2. With this came a dramatic shift in graphics and detail. In the above screen, club emblems, badges and even sponsors can be viewed pristinely, replacing the generic and amorphous blobs that used to represent logos in past iterations. The Portuguese Liga and the Turkish Premier League were removed from the series, with the Austrian Bundesliga becoming a playable league for the first time. One of the games more distinctive features was the "hack" feature, which allowed players to deliberately commit professional fouls on their opponents, such as lashing out with an elbow or performing a knee high sliding tackle. Players could also dive in the penalty area to try to win a penalty. The ability to deliberately cheat in a football game was short lived however due to UEFA introducing a "Fair Play" campaign. FIFA 2001 became the first in the series to introduce a power bar for shooting.
