8. Racing Claude (San Andreas)
These days, looking back across the GTA series, its clear that each game is connected in some way to the others it shares the franchise with. But to my mind, San Andreas houses perhaps the most direct and fan-pleasing self-reference in the canon so far. After splitting up with Catalina , CJ must race her new boyfriend. Remember that face? Thats right, its GTA IIIs Claude! Awesome, right?
The following mission sees you beat Claude in a street race (hopefully) for ownership of his garage. After which, Claude and Catalina leave the city to embark upon an eight year crime spree, which as you may or may not remember, ends in Catalinas betrayal of Claude at the end of GTA III. Of course the returning GTA fan knows this already; seeing the beginning of GTA IIIs story, set way in the past but in a game released way later well, its about as mind-bending as you can get before youre actually time traveling.
