4. Mercenaries (Series)
Developed by Pandemic Studios, Mercenaries was released onto the Windows, PS2, PS3 and Xbox 360 platforms and saw the player assume the role of one of three Mercenaries. Set in a vast sandbox environment, the player could complete storyline missions or tackle side quests, much in the same way as in the GTA franchise. Breaking from the traditional formulae of being set in a city sprawling with civilians, Mercenaries was in fact set in North Korea during a fictitious multi-national military action, and the enemies were soldiers, which gave this sandbox title a fresh approach. Players could radio in support from their faction to destroy targets with bombs dropped from aeroplanes, or even have sports cars and weapons crates delivered when supplies were low. One of the biggest features of the game was the destructible environment - pretty much any building could be razed to the ground with explosives and bombs, and huge bridges could also be reduced to rubble before sinking into the rivers below. Rockstar have yet to add destructible environments to their franchise. This made for a thoroughly enjoyable gaming experience, as well as the ability to assassinate "wanted men" from opposing factions. Mercenaries spawned a sequel,
World In Flames, which was released in 2008, whilst the third in the series is said to be currently in development.
