Although Zombies used to be Treyarch's baby, over the past few years every other studio working on COD has attempted to create their own version of the iconic mode. Some of these have been more successful than others, with last year's WW2 going down the survival horror route and making one of the scariest incarnations yet while Infinite Warfare's was a little half baked.

One thing they've all had in common though, including Black Ops 3's version, is that they've started to prioritise the easter egg hunt "narratives" of Zombies, rather than the simplistic wave-defence formula found in the earlier releases.

That can be fine, and in the case of WW2 made for one of the best incarnations of the mode in a while, but it does hinder the pick-up-and-play mentality that makes Zombies so captivating.

There's a reason why the plain-and-simple Nacht der Untoten is still celebrated today, and while Treyarch shouldn't do away with the more grandiose levels entirely, more of these grounded maps would keep people jumping back into the mode over and over again.
