Even though they've taken place in radically different time periods and focused on new protagonists each time, there's always been something of a narrative through-line connecting each Black Ops game. However, as the series has worn on and the links have become more tenuous, it's started to raise the question: if Treyarch aren't going to make these connections an important part of the plot, then what's the point in having them at all?

From the rumours that've been spread so far it looks like once again the series is moving to a new time period, and unless it's going to pick up with old characters or return to old narratives, then it might be best to keep the references to older games to a minimum.

A couple of easter eggs here and there can still be great to maintain the illusion that this is all happening in the same universe, but you don't want to get to the point of the Star Wars prequels where every minor thing has to be connected to something else, as it can destroy the magic of the whole story.
