7. Micro-transactions
Micro-transactions are an incredibly crass, unsavoury aspect of contemporary gaming, a twisted, cynical means by which developers can seek to rinse even more money out of naive, misguided consumers who don't know any better. Dead Space 3 appears to have fallen victim to this trend, as it was reported just this week that the game will have micro-transactions, allowing you to buy in-game resources that can be used during the game's new crafting mode, to create new weapons and equipment. Not only does it completely undermine the atmosphere of dread even further if you can buy more medi-packs and giant guns with your credit card, but it will give those inclined players an inherent advantage over everyone else. It instantly reminds one of the free-to-play option that a lot of MMO games give players without subscriptions. Don't want to shell out? Then you can get the bare minimum experience possible, where you level at a snail's pace, and the best weapons aren't available. The big difference is that in this case, you've already spent £40 on the game, and
that should unlock all the content.
