3. Immersion Is Everything- Try To Stay In Character

The most important aspect of any D&D campaign’s enjoyability is the imagination of those playing the game. For the most part, visuals and physical aids are pretty minimal, with the majority of what’s going on being described by the DM and your fellow players. This is how immersion is created.

To help keep said immersion alive, it’s important that you stay in character as often as possible. You can of course pause, from time to time, to ask a question or get the DM to repeat something, but anything done in-game should be done through the guise of your character.

Think of how your character would act in any given situation, or how they would react to being treated in a certain way, and play into that. Not only does this make the game world feel more authentic, but it will offer you in-game rewards, through the distribution of Inspiration Points, as well.

If it’s something you’re comfortable with, coming up with a voice and mannerisms for your character can be hugely helpful when it comes to immersion. An experienced group will be able to have full sessions where the entirety of the evening unfolds through the voices and conversations of their characters.

No need to be embarrassed - everyone in the room is just as big a nerd as you are.
