Dungeons And Dragons: 10 Essential Tips For New Players

4. No Cheating- Rolling Poorly Is Part Of The Fun

As with any game involving dice and some element of trust, in can be tempting for new players to cheat when playing D&D. Maybe that dice landed on a lower number when no one was looking, or maybe you “forgot” to remove a used item from your inventory.

Cheating is unlikely to enhance your experience in this game, though, as messing up can be just as entertaining as doing well. Both the fist-pumping glee of seeing a 20 and the sheer devastation of seeing a 1 appear on the dice are experiences that should be earned.

Some of the most fun you’ll have in a game will be when you roll a 1 (critical fail) and manage to trip over your shoelaces whilst jumping a chasm, somehow dragging half of your party down with you in the process. These random events are what make games memorable, not rolling double-damage in every round of combat and blitzing through quests with ease.

Cheaters are likely to be found out pretty quickly too. No one else in the party will appreciate it and you could find yourself excluded from future sessions. Don’t be surprised if you get some funny looks after you exclaim, “Natural 20” for the fourth time in a single battle with an Ancient Dragon.
