E3 2019: 10 Video Game Reveals That NEED To Happen

3. Square Enix Improve On Last Year (And Announce Final Fantasy VII's Release Date)

E3 2018 in general was a touch disappointing, but the biggest blip of the entire event was Square Enix's showcase. Everything the publisher had to show off had appeared on other stages like Microsoft's or Sony's, in many cases outright repeating trailers we'd already seen. Throw in few real surprises, and the fact that they had very few new announcements to talk about, and it was a bit of a shambles.

With most of the games they showed last year on shelves though, now they need to come out the gate swinging. Instead of siphoning off their showing to other companies, they have to maintain the element of surprise going into the event, with exclusive reveals (like the Avengers Project) to capture people's attention.

Arguably, a good chunk of their "conference" will be based around Final Fantasy VII's remake, which was just re-unveiled in Sony's latest State of Play. The game has been in production for four years now, with barely any news on how it's progressing. With that in mind, it's about time Square actually locked in a release date, even if it's just for the first episode.

There's a lot of goodwill the publisher needs to claw back after how poorly they've handled the project, and a major blowout here, combined with an actual release date, can stop Final Fantasy VII from feeling like, well, nothing more than a fantasy.
