17. Massive Entertainment's New Avatar Game Is Avatar: Frontiers Of Pandora

It was confirmed way back in 2017 that Massive Entertainment (The Division) were working on a game based on James Cameron's hit movie Avatar, and during the Ubisoft Forward event it was finally confirmed to be a first-person open-world game, Avatar: Frontiers of Pandora.

The breathtaking cinematic trailer sadly didn't show off any outright gameplay footage, but set the mood by depicting the brutal ongoing conflict between the human Resources Development Administration (RDA) and the Na'vi.

Rather than tie directly into any of the four (!) planned Avatar sequels, Frontiers of Pandora is reportedly an entirely standalone story which seeks to flesh out the world of Pandora.

All things considered, with the track record of direct movie tie-ins being what it is, that's probably the smart way to go.

Though 2009's Avatar: The Game was a wildly mixed bag, it's clear that with the right team this could be something very special. Massive is nothing if not a solid pair of hands to get the job done, and they'll be using Ubisoft's gorgeous Snowdrop engine, so hopes are high indeed.

Frontiers of Pandora will release for PC, PS5, and Xbox Series X in 2022, presumably in conjunction with the (hopeful) release of Avatar 2 that December.
