For a few years now the UFC€™s heavyweight division has been split into a strict hierarchy. At the top of the food-chain you have Cain Velasquez; the undisputed champion and easily one of the most dangerous forces in the entire promotion. Below Cain is Junior dos Santos; the heavy-handed Brazilian who also has extremely good technical boxing skills to match his power. These two men are then split off from the rest of the division by a sizeable gap in combative ability. We wouldn€™t for one minute suggest that the Brazilian should be ranked as the champ€™s equal but it should certainly be acknowledged that Junior is significantly better than the rest of the 265-lbs division. The fact that JDS€™s stand-up is rated at 94 €“ making him the striking equal of Werdum and the inferior of wrestling-expert Daniel Cormier €“ is ridiculous. Cain Velasquez has been given a high (yet deserved) stand-up rating of 97 and JDS knocked him out cold at that memorable UFC on Fox event. Though Cain beat JDS in their two subsequent fights this was primarily down to his intensity and ability to mix-up strikes with takedown attempts rather than through pure striking technique.
