8. Crash Bandicoot N. Sane Trilogy
Like the return of Sonic in 2017, it took a good few years of absolute toss before those behind the characters finally yielded and went back to the old-school. For Sonic that meant hiring fan-modder Christian Whitehead to helm an entire project, and here it's Vicarious Visions who were given the key to Naughty Dog's lockbox, remastering every last voxel into HD.
The result is a spectacular return to form for one of gaming's greatest mascots. It is true that in rebuilding levels that were designed with more primitive, angular 3D graphics in mind, refining those hitboxes means Crash will slip off ledges more often - but that doesn't get in the way of Crash 2 and 3 being stellar video games. Crash 3: Warped in particular is a menagerie of minigames, chase sequences, platforming runs and ability unlocks.
Considering how much we worried than no one other than Naughty Dog could handle the Orange Marsupial, Vicarious Visions did a fantastic job, introducing Crash's loveable personality to an entire new generation in the process.
