12. Niko Bellic - GTA IV

Perhaps the most internally tortured protagonist in any Rockstar video game, Niko Bellic can be regarded as the anti-Trevor. While the latter freewheels through GTA V's colourful landscape, slaughtering innocents and blowing up everything in sight, Niko makes life as a Grand Theft Auto character seem every bit as hard as it should be. Part of GTA's charm is the fact that, for all the horrible goings-on throughout the series, it retains a sense of wacky, satirical humour. Niko is a main obstacle in this regard, reminding the player of his tortured past at incredibly frequent intervals. He deserves credit for his depth, conscience, and sense of justice, but also risks coming across as dour. He's also responsible for bringing Roman to Liberty City, surely one of the most annoying characters in Grand Theft Auto history. No, we don't want to go bowling, Roman. We've got a six-star wanted level, and this helicopter's about to go down.
