Ever since Borderlands 2 set the precedent for the 'looter shooter' genre, the concept has blown sky-high across the industry. Gearbox Software, however, has gone through the wringer with failed titles, epic PR mess-ups and ugly behind-the-scenes scandals.

It's blatantly transparent that the studio needs a win now, so it's a smart move to go back to their winning formula of loot, guns...and more guns.

Fans are excited to get back to the simple (non-microtransaction) thrills of this franchise, with the formula left greatly intact. On the flip side, it runs the risk of getting left behind in an industry full of competitors by not evolving.

Let's see if the company can pull off the 'if it ain't broke' approach after all...
