Fallout 4: 12 Settings That Would Be Better Than Boston

5. San Francisco, California

It's been 15 years since San Francisco was last seen in a Fallout game, a sizeable settlement split between three factions: the Vagrants, the Hubologists and the Shi. The San Francisco that featured in Fallout 2 was impressively realised for its time, but it's a city that deserves to be revisited in the future. San Francisco has iconic sights, green spaces and plenty of history, giving Bethesda a wealth of material to work with. To what extent they choose to build on the lore of the city's previous incarnation is up for debate, but its ties to the series make it the perfect venue for further exploration into the history of the Fallout universe. With Pier 39, Coit Tower, Chinatown, Lombard Street, Union Square, Alcatraz Island and the Golden Gate Bridge to play around with, the gameplay and narrative options are practically endless. Considering San Francisco's reputation as a centre of liberal activism in the United States, the setting could potentially play host to some of the more colourful factions to be found in the wastes, from pseudo-religious cults to bohemian tribes. Either way, it'd be worth it just to see that famous San Franciscan fog in some shade of irradiated green.
