Fallout: Ranking Every Vault From Least To Most Horrifying

11. Vault 96 - Full Of Frozen Animals & Genetic Experimentation

Fallout Vault 112
Bethesda

The idea of Fallout 76's Vault 96 was a sound one: it housed a large amount (approximately 10,000!) frozen animals inside and was to be manned by a very small amount of scientists. The idea was pitched as reintroducing animals to the world in the wake of the nuclear war, but good old Vault-Tec struck again by hiding the true intention of this Vault.

Turns out the true mission of the Vault was to actually conduct genetic experiments on the frozen animals. The scientists were tasked with a daily quote of genetic experiment credits that they had to meet, so were forced despite their objects to implement new mutations into animals such as venom glands, cryogenic abilities and even teleportation (which resulted in animals splicing together horribly).

The Overseer, Erik DeMarcos, was in charge of making sure all of the other residents met the daily quota. The other residents hated him for it, and hated being forced to conduct highly unethical experiments. What they didn't know is that Erik also hated it too; he merely acted the way he did to ensure the survival of his team.

In secret, Erik developed a virus to effectively knock the Vault's dominating supercomputer out of action, hopefully allowing them to escape. When this was implemented, the computer deployed countermeasures and killed every member of the science team left in the Vault.
