Far Cry: Primal - 8 Essential Features It Must Have
5. Innovative, Visceral Melee Combat
Far Cry 3 and 4 dabbled in one-on-one combat. There were several sequences that used dreaded quick-time events in melee fights, and there were also plenty of up-close stealth attacks, which when you levelled up could be carried out with satisfying lethality. The melee/stealth combat mechanics of those games were pretty simple. Once you were up close and personal with your enemies, they were about as much of a threat to you in as a child armed with a plastic spork, and as good as dead. Because of the limited effectiveness of ranged weapons in Primal, the game will, in all probability, force you into far more melee combat than any Far Cry game to date. For this to work, the combat will need to be more rugged, engaging and intense than before. Where in previous Far Cry games getting the stealth jump on your enemies pretty much guaranteed their death, Primal should be more unpredictable. More vigilant enemies should be able to suss out your stealth attacks and throw you to the ground, forcing you into a desperate one-on-one struggle for survival. When this happens, you should be able to pick up and throw stones at your enemies, disarm them, or - if you get disarmed yourself - convert any nearby tree branch, animal bone, or rock into a lethal weapon. One-on-one duels should involve a combination of blocking, dodging, and precise, measured attacks. To make it more tactical, a stamina bar for melee combat should be thrown in too. One thing the melee combat definitely shouldn't have? Quick-time events.
