FIFA 13: 8 Historically Important Teams You Should Manage

5. AFC Wimbledon €“ League Two

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RC0ICDJiR9M Wimbledon were once a staple of English football. The Crazy Gang were controversial but effective; winning the FA Cup by beating Liverpool in 1988. By 2001 they had become a shell of their former selves as the languished in Division One (now the Championship). The Taylor Report had seen the introduction of all-seater stadiums and the Wimbledon board felt a ground-share with Crystal Palace was an ideal solution in 1991. Ten years later the board announced their decision to move the team to Milton Keynes. On May 28 2002 an independent panel ruled that Wimbledon FC could relocate and the move was completed. In 2003 the team was purchased out of administration and re-branded MK Dons. It was an unprecedented decision which devastated the loyal fans and left the area without a team. AFC - A Fans Club - Wimbledon were created and non-contracted players were invited to try out for the team. Slowly and surely the new team progressed to the Isthmian First Division and then quickly won promotion to the Isthmian Premier Division. At the end of a gruelling 2010-11 season Wimbledon qualified for the play-offs. In front of 19,000 the Wombles won 4-3 in a penalty shoot-out to securetheir first term in the Football League. Their rise to the division went down on record as the quickest any team had progressed from the bottom to that level. It was an amazing achievement and their fans now have realistic ambitions of meeting MK Dons in League One. Why not try to win promotion and face MK Dons? The ultimate goal is for a place in the Premier League €“ back where Wimbledon used to call home. Perhaps create a team that terrorises sides as much as the famous Crazy Gang used to do.
