2. Philippe Coutinho
After joining Liverpool last January and impressing with the Reds, Philippe Coutinho looks poised to flourish in Brendan Rodgers' system this year. With Steven Gerrard and Lucas Leiva shouldering the defensive responsibilities behind him, Coutinho is free to showcase his all-around game, with his performance against Newcastle United ranking among the best individual performances in the whole of the Premier League last season. Although Coutinho primarily begins games as a left-sided attacker, he routinely drops off either Daniel Sturridge or Luis Suarez to receive balls from deep. His passing success of 75% suggests carelessness, but Coutinho is one of the few attackers in the EPL who plays a high percentage of forward passes, at around 35%. This risk/reward approach led to Coutinho creating a clear-cut chance every 104 minutes, best in the Premier League according to the English Premier League Index. With a succession of 1-0 victories, Liverpool sits atop the Premier League table, and Coutinho has started and played starring roles in all three games. At only 21 years old, Coutinho is ready to continue his rise in England, and he is sure to receive a ratings bump in FIFA 14. FIFA 13 Rating: 78

A basketball player, but more of a soccer fan really. I once watched in horror as an errant Chris Sutton shot broke my teammate's sister's nose in warmups against Manchester United.
