Per Mertesacker is a player who receives nowhere near enough credit. The Arsenal side in its current form is arguably the most defensively orientated squad we have seen during the reign of Arsene Wenger. The towering figure of the German centre back is very much the adhesive which holds this defensive side together. Alongside Laurent Koscielny, Mertesacker was a mainstay at the back, appearing a staggering 52 times for Arsenal in all competitions last season. On the few occasions that the leadership and imposing size of the German was absent from an Arsenal side, the Gunners felt like a very different beast. With the 2013/14 season the 66 centre back just had, it seems shocking that he has allegedly retained the same rating in FIFA 15 when he did more than enough to warrant an upgrade. Mertesacker may not be the fastest player in the Premier League but his current overall speed rating of 35 (30 acceleration, 40 sprint speed) makes him virtually unusable in FIFA. All too often in EA's game the German is shown wallowing in the dust of a forward who has just dashed past him. Mertesacker is one of the best centre backs in the league and he is most certainly not that slow.
