Memphis Depay may have arrived at Manchester United with bagfuls of promise after finishing as the Eredivisie top scorer for PSV the previous season, but he has done nothing of note since. The Dutchman, signed by Louis van Gaal for £25 million has shown sporadic glimpses of his talent but never much in the way of goals or assists.

Soon, he found himself exiled from the side in favour of the more industrious Jesse Lingard, with teenager Marcus Rashford preferred to him in the striking role.

“Of course (he has disappointed), because otherwise he was still in the team. Otherwise I don’t look for another solution and (that is why) I have kept Jesse Lingard and Andreas Pereira, for that option. Now he has to fight back. I don’t have any problems with players but sometimes they are out of the team because their competitor is in that moment in a better shape but that doesn’t mean that i have a quarrel with the player.” - Louis van Gaal, November 2015.
