After an impressive debut season in the capital, where his 22 goals - including a Champions League final 'winner' against Atletico - did plenty to shake off his enormous price tag, Gareth Bale came in for some stick from perennially spoiled Madridistas during his follow-up campaign.

Just the 13 league goals weren't enough to satisfy them, as they howled at the simple fact that he wasn't as clinical as the man on the opposite flank. Last season was a different story however, as the Welshman upped his La Liga goal tally by six and in eight less games. It proved to be an injury-ravaged season for the former Spurs man, as he played just 30 times - down 18 from the previous campaign. More pertinently, however, whenever he did take to the field he made an impact.

His heroics at international level shouldn't go under the radar either, as his three goals at Euro 2016 helped to propel Wales to an unprecedented semi-final berth, where they would lose out to...who else but Ronaldo? ...and Portugal.

Bale has only just turned 27, and so is approaching the peak of his powers. If he can steer clear of injury, he will be in for an exciting couple of years where he may even be invited to a podium with a shiny, golden ball at the top of it?
