Every side needs a solid spine, and it starts at centre back. Like Grimaldo before him, Jonathan Tah represents a shrewd alternative to an overpriced English-based player (Kurt Zouma - potential 89), but comes with genuine superstar potential. The Bayer Leverkusen CB is rated at a sturdy 79, but can grow all the way to 88, and by that point, he’ll be one of the most sought-after defenders in the world.

Aside from his tremendous upside, Tah is already a great defender with good aerial (heading: 80), tackling (standing: 80, sliding: 77) and strength stats (91). He’s let down somewhat by mediocre passing numbers, but Tah isn’t built to be a ball-playing centre back. Standing at 6’4”, the 20-year-old German is an absolute destroyer, and should be played as such.

You’re likely to pay somewhere in the region of £13m to acquire his services, so while he’s not an immediate bargain, Tah is more than worth the long-term investment. He’s a monstrous presence in defence, and has the potential to become mouth-wateringly good.
