Final Fantasy: 25 Greatest Heroes

7. Yuna (X)

No matter how vehemently we may deny it, deep down we’re all suckers for a good love story. The Final Fantasy series has given us several throughout the years, though the vast majority of these have been implied more than expressly shown. Tidus and Yuna’s romance is by far the most prevalent and does much to elevate the story of Final Fantasy X.

Tidus is very hit and miss as a character, with many taking a dislike to his general cockiness, ‘daddy issues’ and/or cringeworthy scenes that James Arnold Taylor must have winced at having to voice (the infamous laughing one in particular).

Yuna on the other hand, who can be considered the co-protagonist given that the game centres of her pilgrimage to rid the world of Sin, is far more nuanced and well-regarded.

Though it is obvious upon repeat playthroughs, the revelation that Yuna’s journey will come at the cost of her life is a truly shocking one. Her subsequent willingness to continue with it, even after she has been disowned by the society that she is trying to deliver a temporary respite to, is a huge testament to her strength and courage and her ultimate confrontations with Yunalesca and Seymour are a sight to behold.

Also one of the more constantly positive elements of X-2 (the godawful opening concert and changes to her appearance aside), Yuna is a character that you can’t help but root for, multidimensional and amicable in equal measure.
