Though it's been going for 30 years, Final Fantasy sticking to numbered instalments still leads people to believe it's one gigantic, overarching saga.
This is not the case.
While certain items and nomenclature carry over (there are often Chocobo birds, cute Moogle creatures or a character called Cid), each numbered Final Fantasy is very much its own universe.
Yes, there are some exceptions like "Final Fantasy X-2" or the trilogy of games that expanded Final Fantasy XIII, but the vast majority can be dove into whenever you like.
