Final Fantasy 7 Remake HANDS ON: 8 Ups & 3 Downs

3. The Combat

They have changed the battle system of Final Fantasy VII, and this was probably to be expected, given that the Final Fantasy franchise as a whole is now unrecognizable from its earlier turn-based versions. Still, there was talk that something resembling the old ways would feature here, and in the end, it's both.

In the normal mode, players can slash away as they did in XV, while their ATB Gauge fills up for them to perform special actions like using Materia, summoning, using items, or hitting heavier attacks. This works really well, even if restricting items to this option sometimes feels a bit frustrating.

However, in Classic Mode, combat plays out automatically, and allows players to just select commands from the menu after the ATB Gauge has filled up. Effectively, this creates a modernized reworking of the classic RPG battle system. Both modes work well, however, the default setting feels more action-orientated and in tune with how the game plays overall.

Either way, having options that throwback to the original style of the game is a huge positive.
