Football Manager 2013: 20 Free Agents You Should Sign

Attacking midfielders these days tend to be sprightly, young Brazilians with bags of pace and skill, but there are alternatives for those on a shoe-string budget or with limited appeal to the likes of Oscar and Eden Hazard...

17. James McFadden

Age: 29 Nation: Scotland Still relatively young, McFadden seems to have been around the Premier League for a long time, having played for Everton (twice) and Birmingham City, and the fast, hard-working midfielder is currently without a club after leaving Merseyside for the second time this summer after a one-year deal. He's recently undergone a trial at Sunderland, but with no result yet, so sign him up if you're looking for experience and ability for your squad. Again, not a world-beater, but a solid choice.

18. Harry Kewell

Age: 34 Nation: Australia Packing in experience, thanks to his years at Leeds and Liverpool, as well as an extended stint at Galatasaray and a recent deal with Melbourne Victory, Kewell was recently named Australia's greatest ever player and managed to score 8 goals last season despite his age. He's a little on the old side now, but he could still play a big part in a lower league squad looking for experience. Other free attacking midfielders: Somen Tchoyi (29), Rudi Skacel (33), Charles Takyi (27).
