5. Aaron Mokoena (South Africa)
Position: DC/DM Age: 32 Former Club: Wits He might not have emerged particularly well from his time at Portsmouth, but his agreement to cancel his contract did help the financially stricken club out during a difficult period, when other team-mates were infamously refusing to move on. His subsequent season at Wits wasn't great with only 13 appearances, but Mokoena's Premier League experience, and surprisingly solid stats (particularly his mentals, which count for more in his position) make him a good option for low Premier League teams, but most appropriately Championship sides. He's cheap at around £6k a week in wages, and he's a strong squad player, but definitely one for the short term to help progress into the Premier League. Relying on him to play 38 games a season is probably too much of a stretch, but there is definitely enough in the old boy's legs to ensure a solid addition to your backline, particularly if you're struggling to pick up anyone with experience and ability within a limited budget.
