Objective: Break the curse. If you are to enjoy success at Benfica, first you must battle long-standing voodoo, as the curse of Bela Guttmann continues to hang over the Portuguese club and seemingly prevent them from snaring a European title. Current manager Jorge Jesus hasn't had too much trouble of impressing domestically, nor reaching the later stages of the Europa League in recent season, but this summer has left the Benfica coach stressing the difficulties of gelling together a squad devastated by sales. Manchester United's Bebe has been the closest thing to a marquee signing over the past two months, but the outgoings are far more startling. Andre Gomes and Rodrigo have made their way to Valencia, while Lazar Markovic and talismanic striker Oscar Cardozo have moved to Liverpool and Trabzonspor respectively. Midfielder Enzo Perez has been linked with a switch away from Benfica, while youngsters Ivan Cavaleiro and Bernando Silva have been loaned to Deportivo La Coruna and AS Monaco - with both having their rights purchased by Peter Lim, along with defender Joao Cancelo.
