If buying goals is the short-term solution to buying well and seeing an impact on your first team, then buying young is the long-term solution to leaving a legacy and making sure your first team is as strong as possible a decade after you take over. Investing in hotly rated youngsters and wonder kids - who you've sent your scouts out to pour over endlessly (or have looked up online for an easier solution) - is the way to really beat the game. You will see a couple of millions in investment turn into £20m in valuation or more, and future transfers (of more youthful talents) can be guaranteed on the back of that sort of profit return if and when you choose to sell. Some players - like Barbosa - are already hugely talented and expensive, but even they are a better investments than buying a 28 year old for £30m who will score a lot for two years and then go off the boil.
