Game of Thrones: 5 Ways to Make a Great Video Game Adaptation

4. Open World

One of the most important aspects of any ASoIaF video game should be the setting and atmosphere, and the recent Game of Thrones RPG fails in this regard because of how linear and closed off it is. For an RPG, it is incredibly small scale, only allowing the player to travel between a few major locations, such as Castle Black or King€™s Landing. However, even these areas are small, closed off arenas that offer nothing outside of the main objective. There is nothing to see or explore in these areas, and at no point does the world of Westeros ever feel fully realized or properly represented. The result is a world that feels boring and empty when it should be full of exciting possibilities. It is of my opinion that the best means of achieving a true representation of Westeros is to make it open world, à la Skyrim. This would be a daunting task for any developer, to be sure, but well worth the effort in the end. Just imagine being able to travel a world only imagined from the books; to see it fully realized before our eyes. Of course, all the major locations, from Winterfell to Dragonstone, should be available to travel to and fro at your leisure. Such areas should be heavily populated with NPCs to make it feel alive and lived in. Westeros isn€™t lacking beasts to tangle with either, as areas such as the Godswood and Kingswood should also be populated with all sorts of creatures, like shadowcats, direwolves, bears, and boars. And much like Elder Scrolls, the continent should have tons of missions and side quests to flesh out the world and give it life. Westeros is a big place, and for any game to accurately represent the atmosphere of the fiction, it must allow the player to explore and immerse themselves in it. Anything less feels like a copout and a disappointment. An open world in the style and scope of Skyrim is the perfect way to do this.
